St Wendreda's Exterior, March, Cambridgeshire Echoes of the Past Wicken, Soham, St Ives

In 1343 during the reign of Edward III March was given permission from the Pope to rebuild its little church so that the relics of St Wendreda could be returned to the place she called home. There is archaeological evidence that there was an earlier Norman building and possibly even a Saxon church built at the time of Wendreda and her Benedictine Nunnery on the site.

St Wendreda, 972. [5] HM Prison Whitemoor, opened in 1991, lies slightly to the northwest of the town. Whitemoor is a maximum security prison for nearly 500 men in Category A and B. [6] Governance Until 1974 the area was administered by March Urban District Council, based at March Town Hall. [7]

St Wendreda. The parish church at March is the only one in England dedicated to this little-known saint. Wendreda was a 7th-century princess, the daughter of King Anna and sister of Etheldreda and Sexburgha, both of who became abbesses and later, saints. Wendreda became skilled at healing, using water from a holy well at Exning.

St Wendreda's Church March The church is famous for its beautiful double hammer beam angel roof, the donors of which are reputed to be William and Alice Dredeman about the year 1500. Description In all there are appproximately one hundred and twenty angels and 19 canopied saints and martyrs in the roof.
